SUSTAINABILITY

The Fabric

Our swimwear collection's fabric is made by REPREVE®, the world’s leading recycling company, to produce high-quality, certified, and traceable fibers that are made from 100% recycled materials, including post-consumer water bottles and pre-consumer waste. Repreve® is the only eco-performance fiber with U TRUST® verification to certify recycled content claims.

Repreve® Polyamide:
For our regenerated nylon based swimwear fabric, we eliminated the harmful process of:
- crude oil wellhead
- crude oil refinery
- benzene
- cyclohexane
- Hexamethylene Diamine & Adipic Acid
In this case:
For every lb. of our regenerated nylon fabric, 77000 BTU(British thermal units) are conserved, equivalent to 0.6 gallons of gasoline.

REPREVE® Polyester:
For our regenerated polyester based swimwear fabric, we eliminated the harmful process of:
- crude oil wellhead
- crude oil refinery
- naptha
- xylenes
- paraxylene
- terephthalic acid and mono-ethylene glycol
In this case:
For every lb. of our regenerated polyester fabric, 24000 BTU are conserved, equivalent to 0.2 gallons of gasoline.

Dying Process

All of our swimwear fabrics have received the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Certification. Oeko-Tex testing and qualification ensure that our fabrics are free of harmful levels of more than 100 substances. Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex® is one of the world’s best known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. It stands for customer confidence and high product safety.

Ethics

As we are auditing our supplying partners, our staff visit all the factories we work with twice a year to inspect and interview. We select our partners who exceed industry ethical standards with higher wages and world class working conditions. We strictly followed the code of conduct to ensure all the people who have partnered/worked with us enjoy their lives as much as we do. We believe meaningful work provides independence, dignity, and a sense of fulfillment. We look for business partners who share our values actively. If you are agree with our ethos, and wish to collaborate, let’s talk.

Cruelty-Free

The untold amount of animal suffering involved in the fashion industry of old is inherently incompatible with our sense of beauty and increasingly indefensible with the advent of high-tech, vegan fabrics with great functionality and aesthetic versatility. We forgo the use of leather, fur, wool, cashmere, feathers, down, and silk in our designs and believe fashion shall and will evolve to be cruelty-free.

Local Manufacturers

We now work with local experienced manufacturers to minimize the carbon emissions from transportation. Working locally also allows us to remain heavily involved in every step of the production process, forming direct relationships with those creating our pieces and ensuring our high ethical and sustainable standards are met.

Packaging

It’s important to us that every element at SENTiENT is as sustainable as possible. We abandoned plastic bags, wrapping paper, and virgin packaging, replaced with a reusable water proof drawstring bag or zipper bag to protect and carry our swimsuits.

Micro Plastic

When you wash anything made from synthetics—even recycled stuff—tiny bits of plastic called microfibers are shed, which is leading to plastic pollution of our waterways. The bad news is that bathing suits are mainly made from synthetic fibers due to the functions they required. However, the good news is clothes will shed fewer microfibers if you gently hand wash them in cold water. You can also use a GuppyFriend® bag to capture microfibers when you hand or machine wash your stuff.

The Goal

We are working towards a circular production system. Our ultimate goal is to take back your SENTiENT pieces and regenerate them into art sculptures or interior decorations. This system is currently in development and we hope to make it happen as soon as possible.
