ORIGIN
The story of SENTiENT began in 2019, in the shimmering heat of the summer. We were walking aimlessly on 14th Street, Meatpacking District after seeing the biennial exhibition at the Whitney, undecided if we would continue look for interesting stores, grab a coffee, call on a friend, or check out for sewing supplies.
We were both dismayed by the environmental impact of fashion and were looking for a new approach which aligns design and business with sustainability. A creative effort rooted in the love for nature, which recreates the feeling of awe evoked by the sunrise, oceans, jungles, and wild, sentient beings.
Somewhere it clicked. From there, what started as an intangible train of thought evolved into a tangible project with drawings, excels, calls, and visits to factory floors. We had no idea what we were getting into. We had known each other as friends for 9 years but had not been in business together. We had little experience with wholesale channels, professional retailing or digital marketing.
What we did have, however, was a clear idea of what we stood for, a plan to learn by doing, and a conviction in the inevitable transformation of fashion to be more environmentally and socially responsible. Between the two of us, we also had an eye for good styles, a love for travel, professionally training background at design school, theoretical understanding of how the supply chain works, working knowledge of accounting, and somewhat excessive attention to detail.
Throw in a bit of impulse, and SENTiENT was born. You are invited to take it forward.
